Farrah Fawcett loses battle with Cancer at 62

June 26th, 2009 by Co-Worker

June 25, 2009 — Former “Charlie’s Angel” Farrah Fawcett died today at age 62 after a long struggle with anal cancer, her spokesman told media organizations.

Fawcett’s movie and TV roles after Charlie’s Angels included The Cannonball Run, The Burning Bed, Small Sacrifices, Extremities, and The Apostle. Fawcett’s swimsuit poster made her an icon in the 1970s. She and Ryan O’Neal have a son, Redmond, born in 1985.

Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006.

At the time, Fawcett got radiation and chemotherapy to treat her cancer, but in May 2007, Fawcett learned that her cancer was back and that it had spread to her liver as stage IV cancer.

Fawcett had traveled to Germany six times seeking cancer treatment. That treatment included chemotherapy, surgery to remove the original anal cancer, laser treatments of the tumors in her liver, and other surgeries and procedures that were mentioned but not specified in Farrah’s Story, a documentary shown on NBC in May 2009.

Mexico swine flu deaths global spread fears

April 27th, 2009 by Co-Worker

MEXICO CITY – A unique strain of swine flu is the suspected killer of dozens of people in Mexico, where authorities closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in the capital on Friday to try to contain an outbreak that has spurred concerns of a global flu epidemic.

The worrisome new virus — which combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way researchers have not seen before — also sickened at least eight people in Texas and California, though there have been no deaths in the U.S.

“We are very, very concerned,” World Health Organization spokesman Thomas Abraham said. “We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human … It’s all hands on deck at the moment.”

The outbreak caused alarm in Mexico, where more than 1,000 people have been sickened. Residents of the capital donned surgical masks and authorities ordered the most sweeping shutdown of public gathering places in a quarter century. President Felipe Calderon met with his Cabinet Friday to coordinate Mexico’s response.

The WHO was convening an expert panel to consider whether to raise the pandemic alert level or issue travel advisories.

It might already be too late to contain the outbreak, a prominent U.S. pandemic flu expert said late Friday.

Given how quickly flu can spread around the globe, if these are the first signs of a pandemic, then there are probably cases incubating around the world already, said Dr. Michael Osterholm at the University of Minnesota.

Madonna may adopt another child from Malawi

March 29th, 2009 by Co-Worker

The 50-year-old singer is considering the new addition to her family despite her recent divorce from husband Guy Ritchie.

“Many people – especially our Malawian friends – say that David should have a Malawian brother or sister,” she told the country’s Nation newspaper. “It’s something I have been considering but would only do if I had the support of the Malawian people and the government.”

Madonna was accused of circumventing the rules when she adopted David from an orphanage in 2006. Foreigners are barred from adopting children in Malawi unless they have been resident in the country for over a year.

The star said she was determined to teach David, three, about his homeland. His father still lives in Malawi, one of the world’s poorest nations.

“It is a big priority for me to educate my son about the world, but always to stay connected to his Malawian culture. He has a big map of Africa in his room with lots of arrows pointing to Malawi,” she said.

Gun Massacre in Alabama

March 11th, 2009 by Co-Worker

A GUNMAN who killed at least 10 people in southern Alabama began his murder spree by burning down his mother’s house where her body was later found.

Officials have not been able to enter the house outside Kinston, near the Alabama-Florida border, to determine if she was shot, the Associated Press reported.

After burning down the house, the gunman then headed east, into Geneva County, where he shot and killed five people – four adults and a child – at a home in the town of Samson.

Then he killed one person each in two other homes, a person at a Samson supply store and a woman at a service station.

Coffee County Coroner Robert Preachers said many of the victims included members of the shooter’s family.

“He started in his mother’s house,” Mr Preachers said.

Looks like Michelle is already the target of the “gossipers”

LONDON: US FIRST Lady Michelle Obama is believed to be pregnant and expecting her third child, a media report in Britain said on Friday. America is buzzing with hope that the 45-year-old wife of that country’s first black president Barack Obama will soon give birth to a “White House baby”, barely two weeks after his official inauguration, the Daily Star reported.

Michelle and her 47-year-old husband already have two daughters. Internet bloggers and journalists have in fact started the speculation as long ago as November. And, now Los Angeles’ celebrity blogger, Perez Hilton, has written: “This is completely unconfirmed and at this point just a ‘rumour’ but… we’re hearing the talk in DC is that Michelle Obama is pregnant.”

I would have thought twins would be a handful, but 8 babies at once? It is believed the woman already has six children!

“BELLFLOWER, Calif. – Five of the octuplets born to a Southern California woman have begun bottle feeding on formula.

Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center spokeswoman Socorro Serrano says bottle feeding of the other three babies is expected to begin later Wednesday.

Serrano says the six boys and two girls born Monday are all breathing on their own and the mother is also doing well.

The spokeswoman says the mother, whose identity remains a secret, has begun pumping breast milk in anticipation of eight hungry babies.”

Ted Kennedy collapses at Obama’s inauguration

January 20th, 2009 by Co-Worker

SENATOR Edward Kennedy is awake and doctors are assessing him at Washington Hospital Centre after his collapse during an inaugural lunch for US President Barack Obama.

Senator Kennedy, 76, who is suffering from brain cancer was seen being lifted into an ambulance outside the US Capitol building earlier today.

The brother of former president John F. Kennedy reportedly started suffering seizures while at a table in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall with former presidential candidate John Kerry and former vice-president Walter Mondale.

A moment of silence was held at the luncheon in the senator’s honour.

Mr Obama acknowleged there were concerns about the health of the veteran senator who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumour.

“First of all, I know that while I was out of the room, concern was expressed about Teddy.

“I would be lying to you if I did not say that right now, a part of me is with him. And I think that’s true for all of us.

“This is a joyous time. But it’s also a sobering time. And my prayers are with him and his family and Vicki.”

Senator Kennedy was reportedly wheeled out on a stretcher.

His office would not comment on the reports.

Meanwhile, another senator, Robert Byrd, aged 91, also collapsed today.
