Perth-born Hollywood star Heath Ledger has been honoured with the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as the psychotic Joker in Batman.
Ledger was the clear favourite to win Academy Award, which comes just over a year after the 28-year-old died from an accidental prescription drug overdose.
He is only the second actor to win an Oscar posthumously.
His father Kim Ledger and mother Sally Bell and sister Kate accepted the award.
“First of all, I have to say this is so humbling,” Kim Ledger told the audience.
“This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath’s quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here – his peers – within an industry he so loved. Thank you.”
Sally described her son as a “generous soul” and said the family would celebrate his life tonight.
Kate confirmed the Oscar would go to her brother’s daughter, three-year-old Matilda.
“We proudly accept this award on behalf of your beautiful Matilda,” Kate said.

Opening on Friday the thirteenth was good timing for the new ‘Friday the 13th’ movie remake where it pulled in $19.4 million. The weekend ended with $42.2 million. Released by the Warner Bros. banner New Line Cinema, “Friday the 13th” updates the grisly story of killer Jason Voorhees and his rampage among youths at a secluded summer camp.
“It’s a great title, and it was a great weekend to open. We had Friday the 13th and Valentine’s Day,” said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros. “I’ve seen it play a number of times, and the audience is with it the whole way. A lot of screams and a lot of laughs.”
The “Friday the 13th” series has been one of the most-enduring horror franchises, spawning 10 sequels, including the crossover grudge match “Freddy Vs. Jason,” pitting Voorhees against the boogeyman from “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”
The movie bumped off the previous weekend’s top earner, the Warner-New Line romance “He’s Just Not That Into You,” which fell to second-place but held up strongly over Valentine’s weekend with $19.6 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Among other new movies, Disney’s comedy “Confessions of a Shopaholic” landed in fourth-place with $15.4 million, while Sony’s thriller “The International” is No. 7 with $10 million.

Looks like Michelle is already the target of the “gossipers”
LONDON: US FIRST Lady Michelle Obama is believed to be pregnant and expecting her third child, a media report in Britain said on Friday. America is buzzing with hope that the 45-year-old wife of that country’s first black president Barack Obama will soon give birth to a “White House baby”, barely two weeks after his official inauguration, the Daily Star reported.
Michelle and her 47-year-old husband already have two daughters. Internet bloggers and journalists have in fact started the speculation as long ago as November. And, now Los Angeles’ celebrity blogger, Perez Hilton, has written: “This is completely unconfirmed and at this point just a ‘rumour’ but… we’re hearing the talk in DC is that Michelle Obama is pregnant.”

I would have thought twins would be a handful, but 8 babies at once? It is believed the woman already has six children!
“BELLFLOWER, Calif. – Five of the octuplets born to a Southern California woman have begun bottle feeding on formula.
Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center spokeswoman Socorro Serrano says bottle feeding of the other three babies is expected to begin later Wednesday.
Serrano says the six boys and two girls born Monday are all breathing on their own and the mother is also doing well.
The spokeswoman says the mother, whose identity remains a secret, has begun pumping breast milk in anticipation of eight hungry babies.”
